Zuckerberg makes a statement about facial recognition technology
The CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., Mark Zuckerberg, has been called to testify in the context of an ongoing lawsuit in Texas related to the company's facial recognition technology.
The multi-million dollar trial was prompted by a lawsuit filed in February 2022 by a Texas federal prosecutor, alleging that, until the end of 2021, Meta had been”capturing and using the biometric data of millions of Texans without properly obtaining their informed consent to do so”.
The state of Texas also alleged that Facebook”he had been secretly subjecting all the photos uploaded to Instagram to his facial recognition technology” for commercial purposes, despite the fact that the technology company has maintained that it does not use biometrics on that platform.
For their part, attorneys representing Texas also said that Meta violated the Deceptive Business Practices Act by”not to disclose information - including the fact that it collects biometric identifiers - with the intention of inducing Facebook users in Texas to use Facebook, something that such users would not have done if the information had been disclosed”.
Finally, the appellate court issued last Tuesday a resolution which upheld a lower court order requiring Zuckerberg to testify after the state of Texas argued that the CEO of the social media company has a”unique personal knowledge“of information relevant to the case.
